Badalisha Live Poetry Exchange

Hosted in Cape Town, Badilisha Live currently hosts two annual week-long poetry interventions, proudly showcasing Pan-African poets from the continent and across the globe.  Each of these interventions includes two days of full scale performance but also a series of exchanges. With a particular focus on performance poetry as medium for social activism beyond its entertainment and literary value, this vision manifests in a series of workshops, and seminars in a variety of locations where featured poets share their skills, insights and network with local poetry groups, individual poets and relevant NGOs or arts and cultural organisations. Activities also include an annual May 25th Africa Day celebration.

For the May 2010 line up, Badilisha hosted five phenomenal poets from 18th to 25th May. The event started with the X-Change programme, reached a fever pitch of words over two evenings of performed poetry, and culminated in the 25th May Africa Day Celebration.  The five poets are featured in podcasts and interviews on Badilisha Poetry Radio. Badilisha! Live is a platform for poetry enthusiasts and poets to reflect on this art form whilst enjoying the excellence of live performance. Since the liberating forces of performance and spokenword  poetic styles, the art form has become more accessible to a wider audience. Poetry, like all art forms, needs to be celebrated as well as critiqued and in the spirit of exchange, live performances in combination with conversations and skills sharing, can be such a space.
