As one of the Africa Centre’s core projects, the Badilisha Poetry X-Change was conceived to: Celebrate the diversity of languages, cultures and styles of presenting poetry; platform poetry as a performance art; expose and support aspirant as well as established poetic voices; grow audiences and their appreciation for divergent poetic forms; facilitate networking, dialogue and learning opportunities between African & African Diaspora poets and poetry lovers; and provide the means and opportunity to platform poetry focused and dedicated to social change.
The Badilisha Poetry X-Change, after producing two full-scale international festivals in 2008 and 2009 as well as a series of related poetry interventions e.g. seminars, strategic partnerships and collaborative events, has emerged as a unique African poetry project. To-date its engagement with poets from Africa and its Diaspora has been primarily through hosting poets on its platforms and networking with Cape Town based poetry groups to extend their interaction beyond public performances. The intention is strategically reshape the Badilisha Poetry X-Change project format, in order to expand its scope and reach.
