good little children are seen and not heard; so HUGGEES spent early performing years more focused on looking pretty and less on speaking up. with a background in folk dance and steelpan, there were many opportunities to glitter across various stages in north america. HUGGEES left a chorus of primary schoolmates in trinidad and tobago to perform with a family band throughout canada and then later spent a year with a touring performing arts company based in seattle. during that transient time HUGGEES soon looked to thoughts for companionship. after winning a few speech art competitions, a personal relationship with poetry began; organizing spoken word events and performing spoken word quickly followed. HUGGEES now cohosts on community radio in both spoken word and caribbean music programming.
this for HUGGEES is the return from a much needed break from the spotlight. while working with under-served families, HUGGEES uses art as a therapeutic recreation tool. the motivation to engage audiences once more, stems from the continual exposure to communal secrets and the commitment to be more open in order to continue needed conversations around healing. there is power in performance.
HUGGEES is determined to be a carton voice, playwright, dohl player and other artistic ventures as breath allows.
14 yr old girls don't count
14 year old girls don't count
I believe that some of my brothers are misconceived
so I feel it fundamental to share
that mastering the manipulation of the minds of one age level
before moving up to the next will not change the colour of your belt.
it will not get you a shiny badge for all your hard work
it most certainly will not provide a nourishing environment to facilitate
your spiritual growth.
now when i say that 14 year old girls don't count
i don't mean to discredit their knowledge
there's a maturity that comes with having to experience a lot being given so little.
so the 14 years that can't rule their mother,
expect a car two years later,
introduce someone as their lover when they bring them home for dinner
the ones who become mummies to their baby brothers
and get broomstick bruises on their backs for not taking out the trash
because their mere existence is a reminder that
a) the father left the mother for somebody prettier
b) the mother's joy was last seen when she became pregnant at sixteen
and by the third child the mother couldn't get rid of the anger....
these are the 14 yr old girls that i'm speaking of
the 14 yr old girls whose bodies start looking older much quicker
but underneath that hour glass figure
is still a child trying to emulate Beyonce instead of Sade
it's these girls that don't need you waving trinkets in their face
trying to convince them than money is an acceptable substitute for love
and in the real world is the better way.
it's these girls who desperately need a mentor instead of a man
need to experience the innocence of having a boyfriend their own age
instead of seeking affection from men who run from women in their range
because these girls already have to deal with so much
and deserve more than being stuck with
men who can't tell the difference between
black women who are difficult
black women who don't put up with shit
and wherever you brothers are
you need to get off of it.
you need to get up, brush off your ego
and help me tell these 14 yr old girls to put on more clothes.
if no one was there to show you
let me be the first to assure you
that sometimes being an adult
means that you don't get to live your life selfishly
and as a part of a community
you have the responsibility to stop seducing 14 yr. old girls
who are still shaping their identities.
